The Estate and its Vineyards
The Quinta de Santo António do Serrado is situated in Vilar Seco - Nelas, at the very heart of the demarcated Dão region in North Central Portugal, where wine-making has been a way of life for centuries. The Serrado estate has been in the hands of the family of the Baron of Nelas and his descendants since the end of the seventeenth century.
The vineyards of the 7 hectare estate are planted in a fertile sandy clay, granite based soil, and are located on the sunny South facing slopes of the estate, producing a slowly ripened and rich wine, which was first awarded an international prize for quality in 1876, at the World Exposition of Philadelphia.
The vineyard was renovated in 1991 by the present owner, and offers a combination of the regional variety of grapes: Touriga Nacional, Jáen, Alfrocheiro and Tinta Roriz. Our wine production varies from year to year, but we always offer a Single-Variety of Touriga Nacional, a Blend of Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro and Tinta Roriz, and now and again a Single-Variety Alfrocheiro.
In 2010, 1 hectare was given up to Encruzado, a white grape typical of the Dão Region, which has made an astonishing comeback and is now the darling of many a sommelier. The Dão terroir is uniquely suited to growing Encruzado, and this single variety wine produces a full bodied, fruity, mineral wine. Perfect for the Summer months!
The vineyard produces on average around 20 to 30 thousand bottles a year. Some of the wine is aged, according to the traditional method in French oak barrels, but the method of wine production and the bottling system have been fully modernized, producing a wine which, while retaining its unique characteristics, attains the highest standards of quality recognizable to the discerning appreciator of fine wines.
